Auburn University officials have decided to make a major investment in the fast-growing Gulf Coast region. They are pushing ahead with plans to build an education complex on the Gulf Coast that will serve as a hub for the university's student body, faculty, staff and students. The facility will be part of the education campus, which city officials hope will house a library, sports facility, health center and community center, said Dr. David H. Johnson, Auburn's vice president of research and development.
The heart of the Auburn Education Complex will be a referral center for the College of Veterinary Medicine. The veterinary clinic's satellite will offer two weekly clinical rotations to veterinary students in Auburn and treat animals referred to the clinic by local veterinarians. It will also serve as an extension of the Veterinary Teaching Hospital in Auburn, providing South Alabama and the surrounding region with full service veterinary clinics and veterinary education.
Because education is a top priority, Gulf Shores plans to establish the Coastal Alabama Center for Educational Excellence to promote access to higher education. Other aspects of the plan include improving medical care, supporting efforts to restore Gulf State Park and fully exploit its potential as a city, developing a waterfront neighborhood along the Intracoastal Waterway, and further improving and improving the city's Gulf Beach District.
