Gulf Shores Alabama Solar Energy

In an effort to harness Louisiana's strength in offshore energy production, Governor John Bel Edwards has announced a renewable energy initiative in the Gulf of Mexico. The Bureau of Ocean Management, as part of the US Department of the Interior, has commissioned a three-year study to determine the feasibility of offshore solar energy development along the coasts of Louisiana, Mississippi, Alabama, Texas, Florida and Louisiana. The study is expected to be completed by 2020 by the National Renewable Energy Laboratory, which estimates that the Mississippi Basin and its tributaries could produce up to 1,000 megawatts of solar energy. Orsted this week sold more than 1.5 million square feet of new solar panels for the project.

According to an Energy Information Administration report, about 20 percent of Alabama's electricity will be generated from solar in 2018, compared with just 1.5 percent in the US as a whole.

California, which has more than half of the country's solar-power generation capacity, has had its share of solar success, with 5.2 million people using solar. The state has the second highest per capita rate of solar installations in the United States, behind Florida.

Eagle Solar Light installed solar panels at a warehouse in Midfield owned by a Birmingham-based cardboard company. EIA-860, which is part of the U.S. Department of Energy's National Renewable Energy Laboratory, or NREL.

During his tenure, he noticed a fee on his Alabama Power bill that he did not understand, and he learned who was behind it, and noticed that it was a tax intended to discourage investment in rooftop solar. Solar customers advocates filed a formal complaint with the Alabama Public Service Commission (PSC), saying the fee was a "tax" intended to discourage investment in roofs and solar panels, the complaint said. In December, the Georgia Public Service Commission rejected efforts to increase fees for solar users and backed a policy seen as an important step toward expanding the use of solar energy in the state. The Tennessee Valley Authority, or TVA, which serves customers in northern Alabama, offers incentives for customers to install solar panels and plans to end its obligation for solar panel owners to pay for power generation by the end of the year. It charges customers who use solar panels to produce some of their own electricity an annual fee of $5 per kilowatt-hour.

The PAE rate alone is sufficient to deter people who want to use solar energy because of the potential financial return. At the current rate, this means that the initial investment in a solar purchase in Alabama will not pay off for 15 years. The deal gets worse when you consider that Alabama Power also requires that you accept a monthly payment of $1,000 for the first year of solar power generation if you buy solar power here.
